WOW this has been ROUGH in the Life Events category of things, but. slowly crawling out of that. hopefully

this was the opening scene for a something I started writing after watching the Manben inverview with Nishi Keiko and thinking back to all the classic shoujo manga I stayed up reading back in the day, like damn that's so true Urasawa Naoki

it's partially a love letter to all the greats of the genre that I read, and also to the late night teleseryses that captivated me over the years lmao. it'd be nice to find the time to tackle it properly as a comic, but I'm having fun working on it recreationally :)

✨but since it's recreational, some character info✨

the first character seen is lawrence 'law' valenciano (late 30s), the one with the glasses is cris volante (mid-later 20s). law works at a karinderya, cris is an extremely broke university student.

Charles' thing is that he wants to feel alive and that's part of the reason why he decided to never move on to the afterlife right? Meanwhile Edwin thinks Charles will move on and that he'll be alone again because 'he isn't good with people'.

But then when the Night Nurse shows up a second time Charles is ready to go wherever -including Hell- as long as Edwin shouldn't have to go back there, meanwhile Edwin refuses that they be split up, and both are okay with being sent together to the Lost and Found Department to be sorted out later as long as they're together-

#does this make sense #like #charles -> stay on earth #then charles is like -> fuck earth edwin n°1 #edwin -> stay out of hell and wander alone ig #then edwin -> stay with charles #although you can argue that charles wanted to stick around the one dude that was nice to him since the start but like #idk how to explain it #he'd rather argue for edwin's case than argue to stay on earth #edwin not going back to hell is his main goal in the discussion #meanwhile edwin's goal is that they stay together + that he doesn't go back to hell #i do wonder what it would've looked like if they'd gone to the lost and found department #do they try to escape it #does charles find out where he was headed #anyways another day of being very normal about this show #dead boy detectives #charles rowland #edwin payne #paynland #payneland #i know that charles' whole motivation isn't just that he wishes he were still alive and that he wish he hadn't had his life stolen from him #but my thoughts are not coherent enough for any type of deep character analysis essay and i would probably mischaracterize him horribly #wonder what was edwin's plan when he came out of hell cuz he went back to his highschool so was he just doing a bit of visiting #“oh hello place where i died”

based on an idea @username8746489 had where sylvie discovered nightmare fuel for the first time on accident while getting bullied by some older kids (and pushing him further into social isolation now that he's known as "that scary kid who could summon someone's worst fear")

#♦️charlie's art #epithet erased #sylvester ashling #sylvie ashling #ok i have a lot to yap about here hold on #this was a challenge to make since i was imagining it with no dialogue and limited colors i hope i pulled it off #because of those two things something i had to think a lot about was how the color progression changes the mood #I wasn't originally gonna add that last panel with the aftermath but un suggested the idea of the bullies being vague shadowy figures #initially until sylvie realizes what he did and is forced to see that “that was a real person with their own fears and insecurities”#so then they're drawn more detailed #sylvie and the bullies also aren't in the same panels together until the last one because he's just so below them that he isnt worthy of #sharing equal space with them. these kids are highschoolers. if sylvie wants to look at them he'll always have to look up #and also because i was struggling with their height difference #i hope the second page doesn't make it look too much like sylvie summoned a fire 😭 it kinda helps with the mood but what he summoned is #supposed to be ambiguous and i dont want it to look like i was born yesterday and think nightmare fuel ONLY summone fire #but its hard to make it NOT look like fire when i can only work with orange #the lineart starts out clean and gets messier as the conflict progresses to represent a lack of control #and also it creates kind of a shakey/unstable effect which emphasizes sylvie's fear #also unintentional but i think the second page having detailed shading emphasizes the mood changes. this just got SERIOUS #oh also i used the mizu5 untrained as a color reference thats fun #ALSO SYLVIE DIDN'T KILL ANYONE im just realizing the one curled up in the last panel could be interpreted that way #that's not what i was going for #this might be unrealistic...... but we also know so little about sylvie's backstory that who's to say for sure IDK LET ME MAKE MY FAV SUFFER

"Leo, not to offend you or anything, but I can't see shit."

Leo scoffed. "Wow, must be pretty bad if you, of all people, are swearing. Hey, maybe it's because -" quick as a minx, he shot his hand out and -

"Wha- hey!"

-stole the glasses out of Jason's hands. Which is. Something you never do to people with glasses, seriously, Leo? Glasses are literally everything to people who need them?

"- your glasses are dirty as hell, bless your heart. Let me get that for you." Leo continued, unfazed by Jason's yelp and raised eyebrow at Leo, of all people, cleaning.

But as Leo's perpetually grease-stained fingers gently prodded and turned his glasses, Jason found himself wondering if that was maybe unfair of him.

Calloused, nimble hands danced over the wire frames, before pulling a microfibre cloth (and how surprising was that) out of yet another pocket to erase each smudge with care that not even Jason gave his glasses.

They were lying close enough that Jason could see Leo's hunched shoulder and furrowed brow, the sliver of petal-pink tongue poking through the corner of his mouth as he gave Jason's old, tarnished wire glasses the same attention he'd give any of his newest machines. He was close enough to touch the stray curl that fell across Leo's forehead, that he kept blowing away. Close enough to smell that old smell, of syrup-sweet grease and woodsmoke and water. Close enough to hear Leo's pleased little hum as he inspected the frame a final time before straightening and raising his hands to park them right back on Jason's face.

"Better?" He whispered, and Jason didn't reply. He couldn't.

The stars really were beautiful.

"What did you do to these?" He said, finally. "I've never seen this clearly before. Maybe on new-glasses days, but.."

Leo grinned. Jason looked away.

Time and space might have a shot at diluting that burning of his. There was a reason no one went blind watching the stars. But Jason would never be far enough to escape that smile. Like the stars, like the galaxies above, it was about as inevitable as a supernova.

Leo leaned over. "That's the thing, darlin' -" — and Jason's chest went thump — "I've got it all. Perks of being the one-and-only super-sized McShizzle."

Gods. Maybe Nico was right when he said there was clearly no accounting for taste.

He cleared his throat. "Well, thanks anyway. Just.. give me a little warning next time. I could've decked you for stealing my glasses, y'know."

Leo only laughed and leaned back against their blanket. The light from the waning moon fell across him, highlighting his nosebridge, his half-lidded eyes, the spot where his jeans hitched around his knees in his artless sprawl.

Jason let out a shaky breath, and copied him, reclining to give himself a better chance at drinking in the sky.

The stars were beautiful. That much anyone could admit.

..Leo was the most beautiful of them all.
